Brandtson - Grace Thinks I’m Failure

Brandtson (rhymes with “Hanson”) had a storied career as an indie emo rock act out of Cleveland, Ohio. Toward the end of their career they went kinda sour (Read: electro-pop junk), but they once made beautiful melodies. In true late 90s/early 2000s emo fashion, they also had awesomely depressing lyrics.

This is one of my favorite tracks off of 2000’s “Trying To Figure Each Other Out”. Enjoy!

Cant’ get enough of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 album, Nebraska. Recorded as a four track demo, they just cleaned it up and released it. Apparently the rest of the E Street band recorded their parts with the intention of releasing it but after listening to it, they decided to go with the stripped down version. Good decision.

Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math

This is the first single (I use that term loosely) from Manchester Orchestra’s latest album, Simple Math.

If you’re unfamiliar with Manchester Orchestra, this is their 3rd proper LP (if you don’t count an unreleased 1st album). They’ve built up quite an international following with Andy Hull’s personal, introspective lyrics and Jekyll and Hyde-esque vocals.

Check out Simple Math, which just came out this week. I’ve already been through the album about 8 times according to iTunes and I expect it get a lot more plays in the weeks and months to come.

Thematically, the album has Andy Hull, the primary vocalist and lyricist sharing conversations between him, his wife, and God - it’s certainly not on the light end of things. This has apparently been a tough season for Hull and company.

Sonically, the album has moments of light indie rock, heavier, almost grungier guitars, and some very orchestral moments. It combines all that I’ve loved about Manchester into one album, plus some added surprises.

Now if I can just find a bit of spare money to buy the vinyl when it comes out.

Hi all;

Paul here. I’m a husband, a father of two, and a high school teacher on the west coast of Newfoundland. Outside of school and family life, I also run a not-for-profit project called “Mr. H Presents…” I put on concerts and open stage events for young artists in my neck of the woods. Though my tastes range all over the musical spectrum (I’ll post a 25 song shuffle sometime), lately I have had only Shad, The Chariot, and The Dead Weather in steady rotation. I am revisiting the whole Starflyer 59 catalogue too.

My contributions may be a little sporadic, but I do hope to post with some frequency.

Expect review number one by the weekend.
